Fescue Lawn Core Aeration and Overseeding

If you have a fescue lawn, now is the time to aerate and seed it, while the soil temperatures are still warm. Core aeration, or core plugging, is the most common way to aerate your lawn. Core aeration is an affordable way to ensure your lush and green fescue lawn will continue to remain thick and healthy for years to come. Core aeration removes small plugs of soil from the lawn and the plugs will remain on the lawn surface. The process breaks up the compaction of the soil, thereby strengthening the grass roots due to increasing the air, water, and nutrient absorption, which is why seeding is done in conjunction with the aeration, making the seed germination faster and more efficient.

Before yearly core aeration and seeding, make sure to check the lawn for any possible buried rocks and / or debris that might have been missed during the regular mowing season. This is the time to mow the lawn at a lower level, to be sure the seeding makes contact with your soil properly. After the mow but before the aeration and seeding, be sure to rake any lawn clippings or thatch from the lawn. If you have a sprinkler system, be sure to flag the sprinkler heads before running the core machine over the lawn.
